A taxi is useful when your luggage, destination or last-train time makes public transport awkward. The important choices are how to request the car, how you will pay, and which fare applies. The prices below are for Seoul; other cities have their own tariffs.

For a visitor-friendly booking flow, consider k.ride or the Uber app. Kakao T is another option if you can complete its account and payment setup. Check the pickup point and payment method before requesting a car. Seoul deluxe taxis do charge a late-night surcharge: do not choose one on the assumption that it becomes the cheaper option at night.
1. Choose an app you can actually use

k.ride is operated by Kakao Mobility and supports English as well as several other interface languages. Do not confuse it with Kakao T: their registration and payment flows are different. A foreign card working in a taxi terminal does not prove it will register for automatic payment in every app.
Install and check your chosen app while you have a reliable connection. If signup or payment fails, use another service or ask your accommodation to help call a licensed taxi. We have not tested every combination of foreign number, card issuer and app version.
2. Confirm the pickup point and car
- Check that the pin is on the side of the road where you can safely wait. A hotel entrance and its map pin may be in different places.
- At an airport or station, follow the designated taxi-rank or app-pickup signs. Do not assume a driver can stop at any exit.
- Match the registration plate and vehicle shown in the app before getting in.
- Have the full destination address, including the building name, ready to show the driver.
A useful phrase is 여기로 가 주세요. — “Please take me here.” Show the address or map along with it. Do not rely only on the English pronunciation of a hotel name.
3. Understand Seoul’s fare categories

These are starting fares, not the cost of a whole journey. Distance, slow traffic, tolls and applicable out-of-city or booking charges can affect the total. The Seoul tariff linked below is the reference; do not apply these amounts to every city or branded vehicle.
4. Plan for late-night availability
The 22:00 start of Seoul’s standard-taxi night surcharge dates from 2022; it is not a new 2026 change. Compare the actual estimate and available vehicle types rather than assuming a premium vehicle is a bargain after dark.
Rain, events and busy pickup areas can make either an app request or street hail difficult. Check your route before leaving, allow extra time, and use the subway guide if a train remains practical. An app does not guarantee an immediate car.
5. Pay once and leave safely
- Check whether your ride is set to automatic payment or payment to the driver. Do not pay again without checking an apparent duplicate charge.
- If paying in person, check card acceptance before starting and carry a backup payment method.
- Ask for a receipt if you need to check the fare or retrieve a lost item later.
- For a normal sedan, expect to operate the door yourself; follow the driver’s instructions for powered sliding doors or accessible vehicles. Exit on the safe curb side.
You do not need to add a customary percentage tip. Tolls or other disclosed ride charges are different from a tip. If the amount is unclear, ask to see the breakdown rather than assuming every additional charge is optional.

Will my foreign card definitely work?
No guide can guarantee every issuer and app setup. Check the payment screen before booking. If it fails, use an offered alternative or choose a service whose payment options you can complete.
Is a deluxe taxi cheaper at night?
Do not assume so. Seoul’s deluxe tariff has both a higher base fare and a 20% late-night surcharge. Compare the actual journey estimates.
What if I cannot explain the destination?
Show the Korean address and map pin. Confirm the right branch if a hotel, café or business has several locations.
