A Korean convenience store can solve several first-day problems: a quick meal, a drink, a transit-card purchase or a cash top-up. The confusing part is often a fast question at the till, not finding the food.
Quick answer
Choose your items, check the exact promotion, pay and keep the receipt if anything is unclear. Ask for help with heating or a transit-card reload. Do not answer yes to every checkout question: the cashier may be asking about a bag, receipt, membership or preparation, and these need different answers.
What the cashier is asking you
| Question you may hear | A useful reply |
|---|---|
| 봉투 필요하세요? — Do you need a bag? | 네, 하나 주세요. — Yes, one please. Or 괜찮아요. — No thanks. Check any bag charge. |
| 영수증 드릴까요? — Would you like a receipt? | 네, 주세요. — Yes, please. Keep it for a payment or promotion query. |
| 멤버십 있으세요? — Do you have membership? | 없어요. — I don’t. You do not need to invent a phone number. |
| 데워 드릴까요? — Shall I heat it? | 네, 데워 주세요. — Yes, please heat it. Only if you want that item heated. |
| An unfamiliar question | 다시 한번 말씀해 주세요. — Please say that again. Or show the item and ask for help. |
These are examples, not a script every store uses. Pointing to your reusable bag, receipt or meal can make your answer clear. Bringing a reusable bag avoids having to rely on a particular store’s bag supply or pricing.
Read 1+1 and 2+1 correctly
1+1 generally means buy one eligible item and receive one additional eligible item. 2+1 means buy two and receive one extra. Check the shelf label’s dates, exact product and permitted combinations: matching packaging or the same brand does not guarantee eligibility.
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Exact product and size | Another flavour or size may have a different offer. |
| Number of items | For a 2+1 offer, bringing only one item to the till does not give you the three-item unit price. |
| Payment or membership condition | Some discounts require a specified card, app or membership. |
| Receipt | Check that the offer applied before leaving. Ask staff if the charged total differs from what you expected. |
GS25’s official promotion pages distinguish 1+1, 2+1 and other gifts, and tell shoppers to check individual conditions. If you want to mix flavours, ask 이거랑 섞어도 돼요? — “Can I mix this with that?” while showing both items.
Heating food and eating in the store
Pay first unless staff direct otherwise. Then read the package’s cooking instructions and check which appliance is intended. A product meant for hot water is not automatically microwave-safe; remove or open packaging only as instructed.
For a boxed meal, ask 전자레인지 어디 있어요? — “Where is the microwave?” For chopsticks, 젓가락 주세요 means “Chopsticks, please.” Utensils and appliances may be self-service or handled by staff.
Not every branch has seating, hot water or a microwave available to customers. Check before buying a meal that depends on them. Use the eating area as posted, clear your space and separate packaging and leftover liquid into the appropriate bins.
If an ingredient matters for an allergy or diet, use the label and ask for help; a product photo or a word such as “vegetable” is not enough to confirm the full recipe.
Buying and topping up a transit card
Participating convenience stores sell or reload supported transit cards such as Tmoney and EZL. Stock and supported services vary. Buying the physical card and adding stored travel credit are separate transactions.
For a Tmoney reload, show the card and say 티머니 만 원 충전해 주세요. — “Please add ₩10,000 to this Tmoney card.” This example asks for a balance top-up; it does not ask to buy a new card.
Have won cash available for an ordinary prepaid-card reload unless the retailer explicitly confirms another accepted method. A store accepting a foreign credit card for snacks does not mean it accepts that same card for topping up transit credit. Confirm the resulting balance before leaving.
ATMs, parcels and unattended stores
An ATM inside a convenience store is a separate service from the cashier. Look for international-card support and the network on your card, then review the machine’s instructions, fee and withdrawal limit. Availability, limits and fees vary by operator and your bank; there is no single guaranteed fee or ₩300,000 limit for every machine. Cancel if you cannot confirm the terms you want.
Parcel services also differ. Domestic delivery, store-to-store delivery and international shipping are separate products. CUPOST lists distinct services; check the actual destination, accepted goods, packaging, sender details and visitor signup options before bringing a parcel. An ordinary domestic parcel label will not send souvenirs overseas.
Opening hours vary by branch. At an unattended store, entry and payment may depend on a supported card, app or verification method. If yours does not work, use a staffed branch rather than assuming every unmanned store supports every foreign card or sells the same restricted products.
Common first-visit questions
Will my foreign card work?
It may, but store terminals, card networks and bank controls can differ. Keep a practical alternative and ask staff if a payment fails. Check whether an existing transaction succeeded before trying again.
Is a shopping bag free?
Do not assume so. Ask about the available bag and its price, or use your own. This guide does not treat one past plastic-bag rule as the current policy of every shop.
Is every convenience store open all night?
No. Check the particular branch’s hours, especially at stations, inside buildings and in quieter areas. Choose a staffed alternative if you need help with a card or service.
